Quora Key Facts
- Quora announced that it amassed a large user base with over 400 million monthly active users (MAU) as of July 2023 which represents a 33.33% increase from the previously reported number of 300 million. This suggests that Quora has a strong community of users who see Quora as a leading crowdsourced Q&A site.
- Quora has invested in machine learning and AI, and built an AI platform called Poe (short for Platform for Open Exploration) which launched in February 2023. Quora claims that Poe allows users to ask questions and talk to a variety of chatbots, while also offering developers the opportunity to build their own bots and monetize them. This AI integration may allow Quora to appeal to more customers and offer a more personalized product.
- Quora is experimenting with new revenue streams, most notably their $19.99 per month subscription product for Poe. This is different from many other AI-powered tools in the market: Perplexity, Bing Search and Search Generative Experience by Google which all feature ads. Quora CEO has disclosed that Poe users alone have spent $7.3 million on subscriptions since its launch amounting to close to 40,000 paid users.
- Quora's new product Poe offers developers and users access to different large language models. However, this has led to significant challenges for Quora as Poe suffers from a ton of spam, similarly named bots, bots claiming to escape plagiarism, and even ones that might violate copyright law. These bots could prove to be a significant challenge for Quora since they deter users and hurt the Q&A experience that users love.
- Quora faces rising competition from many platforms including Reddit, Facebook, Twitter and even OpenAI which all offer similar Q&A experiences with larger users bases, which could make it difficult for Quora to differentiate itself.
- Some media outlets and users have complained that the quality of Quora's questions and answers has gone downhill. One executive at the company has even acknowledged that given the site's growth it has made it more difficult to sort the "good stuff from the bad stuff". One of Quora's self professed challenges is to find the proper balance between quality and engagement. However, these complaints seemed to have hurt the initial excitement for the platform which could create problems for the long-term success of Quora.
