Betterment offers online financial advisory services in the United States. Its portfolio includes stock exchange traded funds (ETFs) and bond ETFs. The company also provides financial planning, retirement planning, 401(k), traditional individual retirement accounts (IRA), Roth IRA, simplified employee pension (SEP) IRA, trust accounts, tax loss harvesting, and tax-coordinated portfolio services, and cash management accounts. Betterment states that its technology enables users to manage their investments in a customized, diversified portfolio. The Company charges a management fee of 0.25% under its Digital plan on invested assets and enables users to access, view, share, and review their portfolio's activities as well as deposit and withdraw money at anytime.
In July 2019, the company announced that it would begin offering traditional banking services, specifically, a 2.69% promotional annual rate on cash in savings accounts. The rate is offered only to clients who also sign up for a new checking account that Betterment is launching in partnership with NBKC Bank and Visa in September 2019. Otherwise, customers will get 2.43% annually on savings, the company said. A customer must also agree to open a brokerage account to be eligible for a savings account, though it doesn't have to be funded.
The Company was founded in 2008 and is based in New York, New York. As of July 2019, the Company had $18 billion in assets under management and was named by Barrons as the largest independent financial advisor.
