The company's stated plan is to raise the price of its monthly fee to $44 over the next five years, which could bring in even more revenue as roughly 10 million ChatGPT users pay the monthly fee, according to company documents. OpenAI's valuation could potentially reach historic levels for a private company as reports circulate of a potential investment round of $7 billion that could bring the company's valuation to $150 billion. Reports indicate thatOpenAI is well funded and has strong financials which may help the company continue on its path of growth.
- In a January 2025 press conference OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke about the Stargate project which he hopes could help cure cancer and heart disease as well as make personalized cancer vaccines. OpenAI announced on social media that is also hiring for its first hardware robotics roles in 2025, to design sensor suits for robots, create gears, actuators, motors, and linkages for robots, and spearhead the logistics of its data-gathering lab. These future projects will not only create more jobs, but could diversify revenue streams, and create a competitive advantage for the company.
- OpenAI has announced 30 deals and partnerships with tech and media brands as of January 2025, that are described as significant. According to an article, the media brands that sign on with OpenAI will be discoverable in OpenAI's products, including chatGPT, and OpenAI will be able to use the content from these brands to train its systems. In a blog post, Microsoft described their partnership with OpenAI as "strategic", writing that the partnership could help sustain financial backing, access resources, and also provide integration opportunities within enterprise applications.
- OpenAI expected $5 billion in losses on $3.7 billion in revenue in 2024. CEO Sam Altman also revealed that the company is losing money on its $200 per month Chat GPT Pro subscriptions as of January 2025. "The high operational costs associated with running advanced AI models have outstripped the revenue altogether." A report suggests achieving profitability might remain elusive for the company as it navigates the complexities of scaling AI technology.
- The AI space is highly competitive with companies like Google, Anthropic, and most recently DeepSeek competing directly with the company and challenging OpenAI's market dominance. Additionally, a March 2025 report suggests that Microsoft is potentially looking to split ways with OpenAI as it is developing its own in-house reasoning models that will directly compete with OpenAI. They have also been testing other models from xAI, Meta, and DeepSeek to replace ChatGPT in Copilot. There are multiple other companies developing their own models, like Alibaba.
- State legislatures are attempting to reign in AI, as "hundreds of AI-related bills are flooding state governments nationwide, and hundreds or even thousands are expected by the end of 2025". Proposed regulations, such as California state SB 1047 (The Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act) sought to impose restrictions on large AI models.
